I'm not into Grand Seikos. However, I would like to get a Spring Drive watch someday, and they've got a GMT movement in this line, the 9R66, so that would be my preference. The SBGE005 looks good on the used market, being on the lower end of the price range. Close to it is the barely dissimilar SBGE009, mainly differing in having some crown protection and an opaque case back. I like the clear display case back of the SBGE005, as it lets you see that nice uni-directional escapement. The "Evolution 9" SBGE285 (or SBGE283) looks alright as well - and pretty non-GS imo. It's all titanium and has great lume, too. Oh, and also sports a display case back. But it's new so will be too expensive for some time. Huh, there's a 3 time zone one: SBGE275. Quite expensive though, and maybe it's a tad too sporty looking?.. Undecided. I do really like having three time zones... The SBGE277 has more readability with its black dial. Oddly, this model turns up images with a uniform black dial and also this paint brushed pattern...? Update 28 September 2023: I currently feel a 9RA2 movement is where I'd like to go with this. It's less boring to me than a watch with a 9R65 (non-GMT) movement because, while it doesn't have GMT, it boasts a 5-day power reserve and slimmer size. An example: SLGA019 Lake Suwa (too expensive for now though) Update, January 2024: SBGA101 can be had second-hand for around $3k AUD. Not GMT and no display back, but has decent dimensions, lume(!), screw-down crown and 100m WR. It largely satisfies GADA like the SBGE283, but for far less money. Seems a far more sensible option for someone in my financial situation. Update 2024-03-26: Oh, there's an all-black version of the 3-TZ sport model! SBGE201 Annnnd another one... SBGE271 https://www.grand-seiko.com/au-en/collections/sbge271g No lume, but ticks the other boxes and has similar dimensions to the SBGE283. About $2k AUD cheaper as well. (~$6k as of March 2024) |
